Morning comes, and we’re off to our own corners. She’s finishing the mural, and I’m in my office. But I want to sit in the lobby and watch her work all day. She gets the cutest thing happening when she’s focused-she purses her lips and makes the slightest expressions that tell me when she likes something or when she wants to change it. I’m not sure if she even knows that she does it. I sigh at the memory of her sweet facial tics.

Ray knocks and walks in, closing the door behind herself. “Good morning, Mr. Rhodes.” Her face is stiff and set, like her gray dress which is ironed to perfection. Tall black heels make her tower over me at my seat.

“Good morning, Ray.”

She looks at me but doesn’t speak.

“Will you be joining me today?”

“I need to know what’s going on.”

“You mean that thing I said about Britney? I wasn’t serious about getting back with her. I was just-

“I know. You were pissed, because you thought Valerie had slept with Noah. And I know you’re not pissed anymore, because you came into the lobby with your hand on her ass, so no, this is not about Britney.”

I frown. “What is it then?”

“I am worried about the grand opening.”

“Oh. Well, we’re nearing completion, just some superficial tweaks-

Her nostrils flare and her blue eyes became starkly serious, “Adam, you have authorized an additional million dollars for your superficial tweaks. Do you know what that looks like?”

“What are you talking about? The thing with Noah?”

“Of course. This project is already nearing budget, and if we go over, your parents will never let you takeover Rhodes Resorts. Never in a hundred years would they approve such a thing. What are you doing?”

“My job,” I’m getting tired of her questions. “What are you doing, Ray?”

“My job,” she snaps, “You told me when you hired me to help you stay on the straight and narrow for the duration of this project. You told me to stop you from making dumbass decisions, and until now, we have been a team. But instead of being on the straight and narrow, you’ve gone way off course at the last minute, and I don’t know how to stop you. How the hell do you expect me to do my job, when you don’t include me on anything? You don’t tell me anything-I had to find out about it all secondhand from the staff, like I’m some kind of…”

“Employee?” I ask. “Don’t forget, Ray, that’s what you are.”

“And you are running yourself into the ground over that woman.”

My face drops and my blood pressure rises, “What did you say?”

“If you weren’t infatuated with Valerie, a girl you’ve known less than a month let me remind you, then you wouldn’t be making all of her last minute changes and throwing everything into chaos right before the grand opening.
